Disability Arts: Critical Conversation between South Korea and Singapore

Disability Arts has emerged as a powerful and dynamic area of practice within the wider arts and cultural landscape regionally in recent years. Yet, the work of rethinking and rebuilding disability-centred arts ecosystems is an ongoing process for artists, advocates and policy makers.
In both South Korea and Singapore, disabled people*, artists and advocates have been at the forefront of this critical work — raising voices, establishing process and framing works by disabled artists in ways that shake and loosen existing structures.
Join artists and disability advocates as they engage in critical conversations about making and presenting works made by disability artists in Singapore and South Korea in two online public panels on 5th March 2022.
These panels are an initial step towards nurturing critical frameworks for more scholarly and curatorial interest in the subject, centering artistic exchange between East Asia and Southeast Asia.

Four artists discuss their experiences, artistic practises and identities in a discussion that will touch on the dynamics of intersectionality, representations and expectations of ‘authenticity’. Disabled artists and their allies craft their voices, oftentimes against the social norms, and their voices become aesthetic and political tools. What can we learn from their lived experiences, and how can we better understand and appreciate their voices?

Advocates, administrators and artists share their strategies and experiences in reorienting critical discourses, policy, funding and institutions in ways that challenge the normative impulse of our public and private institutions. How can disability-led practises, centering the lived experience and creative perspectives of disabled artists and audiences, create dynamic, equitable ecosystems?

Taeyoon Choi Studio works in arts, technology and education to enhance accessibility and creative expressions. The Seoul-based studio collaborates with international artists, designers, engineers, and organizations.

장애 예술: 한국과 싱가포르의 비평적 대화

최근 몇 년 동안 장애 예술은 지역적으로 보다 넓은 문화 예술 풍경 안에서 강력하고 역동적인 실천의 영역으로 부상했습니다. 그러나 여전히 예술가, 운동가, 정책 입안자들에게 장애를 중심으로 하는 예술 생태계를 재고하고 재건하는 작업은 현재 진행형에 머물러 있습니다.
한국, 싱가포르 양국의 장애인*, 예술가, 운동가들은 이 문제의 선두에 서서, 기존의 구조를 뒤흔들고 헐겁게 하며, 목소리를 높이고, 과정을 확립하고, 장애 예술가들의 작품의 틀을 만들어 왔습니다.
2022년 3월 5일, 6일 양일에 걸쳐 열리는 이번 온라인 토론에 싱가포르와 한국의 예술가, 장애 운동가가 참석하여, 장애 예술가의 작품을 어떻게 제작하고 보여줄 것인가에 대해 핵심적인 대화를 나눌 예정이니 많은 참여 바랍니다.
동아시아와 동남아시아의 예술 교류를 중심으로 하는 이번 토론은 이 주제에 대해 더욱 학문과 기획의 관심을 높이기 위한 핵심적인 틀을 조성하기 위한 첫 단계입니다.
