Hi!
My name is Taeyoon, I’m an artist and educator based in New York City. I’m looking for a studio assistant. I work with drawing, painting, writing, computer programming, custom electronics. I teach at School for Poetic Computation which I co-founded and actively work on the administration. I work with various communities around the world, often times focusing on the issues of accessibility, inclusion, disability, minority’s rights to education and technology. I have plans for solo exhibitions, publication and workshops in the U.S., Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and other places in the near future. I’m looking for someone who will work with me on exciting projects in these places.
Requirements:
- Based in NYC or surrounding area. Must be able to work on site 6 hours/ day, 4 days/ week (roughly 25 hours/ week) in studios in Downtown Brooklyn and Chelsea, Manhattan.
- General understanding of and excitement for contemporary art
- Big heart for community, education and activism
- Fearless attitude to learn and explore new technology
Priority #1: Excellent administrative skills, scheduling, budgeting, documenting (See Tasks)
Priority #2: Excellent editing skills, grammar and spelling in English
Optional preference #1: Intermediate programming skills or familiarity with technology preferable. (The candidate will project manage and communicate with Taeyoon’s many collaborators. The candidate needs to understand technical workflow and communicate with coders, designers and engineers with respect to their culture and expertise. See Tasks)

Tasks:
Must be organized, good with time management, scheduling and communication.
You will become familiar with my workflow and assist me in scheduling and prioritizing my time in order for me to get the most out of my day. This will include things such as helping to keep an updated to-do list, scheduling daily, weekly, and monthly goals, and planning out effective timelines for multiple projects with various collaborators.
You will also help with some editing of code, such as formatting writings into Markdown, Front Matter, html. Taeyoon and his collaborators will train you learn necessary skills for new projects. You will be expected to take your learning to the next step on your own.
You will assist Taeyoon and his collaborators explore new and old hardware platforms (from Raspberry Pi to FPGA), tool kits (Processing, p5.js, openFrameworks), programming paradigms (from functional programming to esoteric languages), and custom systems (from circuit design to virtual machines). You don’t need to be proficient in all of these technical topics (and it’s impossible to have knowledge in all of them!) but you will need to be willing to ask for help, learn on your own, communicate with top class engineers and designers, and project manage highly technical and culturally complex projects with respect to everyone’s schedule and budget.
You will need to have familiarity and willingness to learn to use various computing environments (Mac, outdated Windows, Linux) and version controlled repository (Github and etc).
You will work on my writing, proof-reading, as well as assisting with different tasks such as organizing project documentation.
You will be helping me look into logistics for lower-level aspects of projects (such as looking into where I can get the best prices for supplies, etc.) and finding local collaborators. Spreadsheets are our best friend, Email is our bread and butter. We will organize eccentric collection of data, back up (physically and on cloud), and wait for the world to synchronize.

Fee:
Taeyoon Choi is committed to providing fair wage for employee. The assistant’s payment will be higher than the average wage on Payscale.com for artist assistants. Simply put, this means your base pay will be $2000+/month for working 25 hours (3~4 days, part time)/ week.
Successful candidate will work for 1 month (paid) trial period, and negotiate 3 months contract with an option to renew for additional 12 months. We will work together to create a reasonable and scalable pay rate for ourselves and others, inspired by Working Artists and the Greater Economy.
